State Command Chief Warrant Officer - Chief Warrant Officer 5 Lonny E. Hofer

cwohofer.jpgCommand Chief Warrant Officer Lonny E. Hofer was appointed by Major General Timothy A. Reisch as South Dakota’s Sixth State Command Chief Warrant Officer on 1 May 2015. As the Command Chief, he serves as the senior warrant officer advisor to the Adjutant General to address the warrant officer development and strength management of the Warrant Officer Corps. CW5 Hofer is responsible for keeping the Adjutant General informed and making recommendations in matters of recruiting, morale, welfare, schooling, promotion and retention. He oversees a Warrant Officer Advisory Committee as the spokesperson to advise the Adjutant General and the chain of command on warrant officer management.

CW5 Lonny Hofer began his military service in July 1974 when he enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard with HHC 153rd Engineer Battalion in Huron, SD. He spent the next nineteen years in numerous enlisted positions with HHC 153rd EN BN and the 109th Engineer Group in Rapid City where he attained the rank of SFC. He received his appointment as a warrant officer in April 1985 with the 109th EN GP. CW5 Hofer is a graduate of the Warrant Officer Staff Course and the Warrant Officer Senior Staff Course at Ft. Rucker, AL. Throughout his career, CW5 Hofer served as a Maintenance Technician with the 109th Engineer Group Headquarters in Rapid City, SD; Support Staff Maintenance Technician, Ground Safety Officer, and Senior Maintenance Officer with Joint Forces Headquarters in Rapid City, SD prior to his selection as Command Chief Warrant Officer. CW5 Hofer deployed in 1991 in support of Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield and again in 2004 for OEF V with the 109th EN GP. In 2014, Chief Hofer was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 5.

On the civilian side, CW5 Hofer has been employed as a full-time SDARNG Technician for 35 years. He started at Organizational Maintenance Shop #9 in Huron, SD; was promoted to Combined Support Maintenance Shop #2, Rapid City, SD; and is currently the State Safety & Occupational Health Manager for the SDARNG in Rapid City, SD. For the last 16 years, CW5 Hofer has been a member of the Exchange Club of Rapid City, serving in positions of director and president.
